Like I mentioned in my previous post, I have recently enrolled on a few courses over at iKnow and have started learning Hiragana. Hiragana is one component of the Japanese writing system, along with katakana and kanji; the Latin alphabet is also used in some cases.
Hiragana characters do not have any particular meaning in and of themselves. Rather, Hiragana is used to represent the basic syllables in Japanese speaking. There are 46 Hiragana symbols in Japanese, each with a particular sound but with no independent meaning.
What I am learning at the minute is fairly simple, children in Japan learn to read and write Hiragana first until their knowledge of Kanji increases, as a result many books for young children are written in hiragana only and provide a great source of practice material for someone like myself who is learning Japanese for the first time.
Here are a few sites I have been using to learn and practice my Hiragana:
Well that’s all for now, feel free to check back later in the week.
